Cats Lose in Overtime
KINGSLAND - Penetration isn't a great way to win a football game. It's an awful way to lose one.

Especially in the playoffs.

Valdosta High's season ended with a 15-14 penetration loss to Camden County Friday night at Gilman Stadium. Camden drove to the VHS 40 on its first drive, and to the VHS 16 on its last one, then ran out the clock, and the season for Valdosta. By the GHSA rules, Camden was then awarded a penetration point for having moved the ball further down the field.

AJC.com Tournament of Champions: '71 Valdosta, Rome live up to legend
Valdosta's tradition isn't to glorify the individual, but if there ever was a Wildcat of distinction, it was Stan Rome.

As a sophomore receiver in 1971, Rome caught 72 passes for 1,573 yards and 20 touchdowns. All were GHSA state records, and two of them lasted 25 years. Rome's career marks -- 209 for 4,187 yards and 43 touchdowns -- still stand.

Rome, who later played football and basketball for Clemson before a brief NFL career, added five unofficial catches and a touchdown to his numbers this week in the AJC.com Tournament of Champions. His '71 Valdosta team demolished 1969 Athens 42-7 in the Class AAAA first round.

Valdosta, who fielded nine teams in this computer-simulated tournament, won 5 first round games while losing four.
